Have you heard the buzz about town? We have a new look, a new name and a new foundation class. Fly into the Hornbills Nursery and Kindergarten, for 3 – 6 year olds, and watch your child soar!
This is the start of your child’s learning journey. From the moment you walk through the door, you can hear the buzz of happy, confident children hard at learning. Our purpose built, safe and spacious setting helps make learning a positive experience for all of our children.
Children enjoy a themed playing area, reading room and purpose-built classrooms and toilets. In addition, our students benefit from sharing some the campus’ services and facilities, including the qualified school nurse, library, swimming pool and smart devices.
Here children make excellent progress in all aspects of their learning. We follow a hybrid programme from the Early Years International Primary Curriculum. Students learn through a mixture of teacher-led, teacher-enhanced and child-initiated activities.
Come and experience our secure and stimulating learning environment where your child will feel supported, valued and cared for.
Step by Step
We’ll guide you and your child through each level:
Nursery (Ages 3 – 4)
Nursery class is the first journey your child may take into the world on their own, which can be an emotional journey for both of you. We’ll ensure their days are buzzing with positivity, as our teachers adapt learning areas and structured activities that work within a free-flowing timetable.
Children are supported with their:
- social and emotional skills
- literacy and maths introduction
- exploration of the world around them through play
Reception (Ages 4- 5)
The Reception class is more structured than the Nursery class. The learning is tailored to meet the children’s needs and the Early Years’ topics. Reception is designed to prepare learners for formal classroom learning by providing children with the skills to access:
- reading initial letters and phonemes.
- writing letters, numbers and other symbols.
- recognition and application of numbers.
- social skills and social norms.
- play and exploring their personal learning.
Foundation (Age 6)
Our Foundation Class is specially designed to cater for students intending to join Standard 1 in Sekolah Sri Knewton. Your child will learn lots of new skills, which will help them in their transition to formal schooling, including:
- speaking and listening
- learning numbers and letters
- social skills and making friends
- playing and exploring
Our Foundation curriculum is carefully planned to make sure all children thrive and achieve.
The key areas include:
- Music
- English
- Mandarin
- PE and Swimming
- Bahasa Melayu
- Phonics
- Art and Craft
- Mathematics (taught in English)
- Creative and physical development
- Communication and listening skills
- Personal and social development
We aim to support each child to identify their own sense of identity and self-worth, as well as focusing on their individual needs and interests.

Testimonials
We are an Australian family living in Miri and we wanted our children to continue their education following the International Primary curriculum. I find the students here are happy, respectful and friendly. The school has an active PTA that works to build a community not just for the kids, but for the whole family.

My child has improved significantly in her reading, writing and communication skills, thanks to the dedication and commitments from her teachers. The school is a wonderful place and definitely a great place for learning.
- Anthony Chin (Parent)
We have noticed enormous growth within our children, mentally and emotionally. The children are excited to go to school in the mornings and as parents we have never looked back. We are proud to be part of the school’s family.
- Michelle Oosthuizen (Parent)
My children are more confident, assertive and able to voice their opinions freely, which they would not have been able to do in Japan. There are a lot of opportunities in this school and students are encouraged to take challenges.

The temporary measure of distance learning is a new experience for me - it’s my first time trying to get work done through online classes and assignments. I've learned the importance of time management, I’m able to manage and organise my schedule effectively and accomplishing what’s more important first.
- Xin Ying (Year 10)
The temporary distance learning programme has been very interesting; it has taught me to manage my time well and how to set a good daily routine at home. It has really helped me with my organisational skills and how to stay in control under stress.
- Karin Ong (Year 8)
Distance learning has been a great opportunity to learn good time management skills. I like being able to work at my own pace while still being able to get all the help I need from teachers and peers. Overall, the experience has been very fun.
- Sofi Lea (Year 9)
I love the fact that I get to use so many of the school's great facilities - the auditorium, swimming pool, music rooms, art rooms and all the different CCAs and events that we can participate in.
