Tenby Schools Miri is now officially Knewton Global Schools, under new operator Bonanza Educare Sdn Bhd. Knewton Global Schools will continue to operate three schools on its Senadin campus; an international British school, private national school and pre-school, for pupils aged 3 – 16 years.

The new name marks a milestone in the school’s 98-year history, and reputation as one of the longest established international schools in Malaysia. Originally situated in Piasau, known as Piasau School, set up to serve the expatriate community of mainly oil workers. In 2011, the growing school selected Tenby Educare to operate the school and moving to its current campus in Senadin, and adding a Private National school to meet the diverse demands of the community. In 2016, founder of Tenby Schools, Dato’ Lim Si Boon sold Tenby Educare but remained the landowner of the Miri campus. Forming a new education group, Bonanza Educare Sdn Bhd, the team welcomed back the Miri campus in August 2019.

Bonanza Educare continue to build an educational portfolio of international and national schools, pre-schools and enrichment centres across Malaysia. Knewton Global Schools’ Campus Principal Ms Wee Sim Lam said: “Our new name and look is combined with a renewed ambition to provide the best opportunities for our young people to be the best they can be, no matter what challenges they may be facing. “We’re hosting musical, artistic and sporting competitions, with an official naming ceremony hosted live on Facebook on Friday, 5 June. The campus has been closed since the Movement Control Order and our students and teachers have adapted successfully to a distance learning programme, so to honour new ways of working, the new name will be launched online.”

Referring to all schools being closed, Ms Lam added, “I would like to thank everyone – staff, parents and students – for the ways in which we have united in responding to the pandemic so far. We have a collective responsibility to ensure that our students are safe and have continued to learn from home. Resilience and self-organisation has been key and we should all be very proud of what is being achieved. “It is vital that we are able to keep pace with the changing needs of industry. The world is innovating faster than ever before and to stay ahead we must continue to nurture each student. We all look forward to welcoming students back to school as soon as is safely possible.”

Launching Our New Look

We’re officially Knewton Global Schools!  It’s not been a secret that Tenby Schools Miri is changing its name to Knewton Global Schools as we set on a new ownership journey last year. The big spoiler came when we delivered the uniform early to ease costs to new parents, so our new crest has been in fashion since January!

We planned to launch the new name during the annual Family Fun Day, in the setting of true community spirit. However, with all mass gatherings cancelled and our students successfully adapting to a distance learning programme, the show must go on!

We’re celebrating our new name with school competitions and lots of opportunities for students, family and friends to get creative and get involved. From short story competitions, art competitions to full on family musical performances. Get ready as we roll out the virtual carpet on Friday 5 June – watch this space for more details and how to win prizes.

So Why the Change in Name?

The new name marks a new milestone in the school’s 98-year history, and reputation as one of the longest established international schools in Malaysia.

Originally situated in Piasau, known as Piasau School with a colourful hornbill logo, it was set up to serve the expatriate community of mainly oil field workers.

In 2011, the growing school selected Tenby Educare to operate the school, moving to its current campus in Senadin, and adding a Private National school to meet the diverse demands of the community.

In 2016, the founder of Tenby Schools, Dato’ Lim Si Boon sold Tenby Educare but remained the landowner of the Miri campus.

Forming a new education group, Bonanza Educare Sdn Bhd, the team welcomed back the Miri campus in August 2019. Bonanza Educare has continued to build an educational portfolio of international and national schools, pre-schools and enrichment centres.

Why Knewton?

Knewton is a blended word that references:

Kn- Knowledge  New – latest   Ton – mass

Remember, if you see a word that starts with ‘kn’ you only pronounce the ‘n’ (sounds the same as Newton – our very own unit of knowledge). We’ll have some fun ‘silent K’ stories coming soon.

Knewton has several knickknacks which make up the visual identity. The crest contains a Hornbill as a much-loved nod to the history of the school and the local area. The stars represent our students and communicate our promises and sparks of greatness in our community.

The K-new look is combined with a renewed ambition to drive continual improvement of teaching and learning to provide the best opportunities for our young people to be the best they can be, no matter what challenges they may be facing.

House Logos and Sports Team

We’ve re-styled the house team logos (Lions, Sharks, Cobras & Dragons) and have formed a new school team name The Knewton Knights, as we prepare for more inter-school competitions, virtually or when it is safe to do so.

K-New Class

It’s not all bells and whistles, we’re also strengthening our academic offer, introducing a new foundation class for six-year-olds and opening up registration for Sekolah Sri Knewton’s Form 3 for 2021.  The pre-school will be renamed The Hornbills and our students are set to soar.

Anything Else?

We are immensely proud of our students and our school community, especially how fast they’ve adapted to distance learning while the campus remains closed.

It is vital that we are able to keep pace with the changing needs of industry. The world is innovating faster than ever before and to stay ahead we must continue to nurture each student with passion, care and intention, alongside our teachers, staff, parents and partners.

Welcome back Miri Tutti Camp
(4th – 8th Dec 2019)

Miri Tutti Camp

The Miri Tutti project is an instrumental training opportunity for young musicians and we were delighted to once again be the host of this instrumental training ‘camp’. We were excited to welcome back Ms. Loretta Finn who will be running the beginner and intermediate string sessions.

The camp also gave us the opportunity to welcome over 110 participants, including experienced Board of Faculty and teaching assistants from Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Malaysia to our school.

It was wonderful to hear the campus come alive with the sound of music! We were also serenaded by tutors from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YST) during lunchtime as they performed chamber music in the cafeteria for everyone. Our tutors have really set the bar high, and the challenge is on for participants to strive for the same beauty of sound and communication of music!

The Showcase Concert on Sunday afternoon gave everyone the opportunity to share the amazing progress they had made over the five-day programme. Special congratulations goes to our students who participated in this fantastic event!

STAR Day, a day our school community comes together to express their appreciation for the contributions of our team of staff and teachers. Everyone gathered in the auditorium and Mr. Rob De Pree, the Chairman of the PTA started the morning with every staff member receiving beautiful fresh flowers and cards. It was a joy to see students showing their appreciation for their teachers with ‘Thank You’ cards as well as video messages that were played on screen.

The team were then treated to a fabulous lunch in the beautifully decorated staff room. The members of the PTA (Parents Teachers Association) even put up a photo booth for staff to snap a few pictures to remember the event. The lunch that was prepared by members of the PTA filled members of staff with food from across the globe, from appetisers to desserts, they were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

A big thank you to the PTA for organizing this special event for the team as well as parents who contributed to the feast.
